What we did

  • Pipefish were already assisting the customer with an Enterprise Agreement license renewal process
  • As part of the engage Pipefish assisted in the review and determination of unnecessary consumption of Microsoft SQL Enterprise Edition, instead of other lower cost alternatives such as Express and Standard Edition
  • Determined if each of the Enterprise installs was actually utilising any of the Enterprise features, or if other entitlements provided an alternative option for the SQL Edition
  • Located and negotiated with the system owners/DBAs a number of treatment options, many of which involved the process of downgrading the SQL instance to the Standard edition
  • Scheduled the system downgrade within the organisations change management process
  • Executed the downgrade (with rollback option if required), across a large number of installations globally
  • In all cases, the entire fleet of just under 300 remediations were completed without any unplanned business interruption

Delivered outcomes

Approximately $8M cost avoidance associated with removal of unnecessary use of Enterprise Edition over four (4) months at a cost of ~$400K.
